Laura Stein on RealTime

Hey!! Did you all listen to RealTime on CBC STereo last night?? Well, if
you didn't, you missed the new moonsocket song (which I missed thanks to
a certain listmanager phoning :P ), new plumtree song (which i honestly
didn't like all that much except for the vocals which were really cool),
and a brief interview with Laura from jale.

*****
RealTime host Leora: ...a couple of brothers from Louisville, Kentucky,
that's Palace Music and "work hard and play hard" and I can tell you who
did both of those things tonight. Halifax band jale, they're in Chicago,
they just got off the stage, finishing their set at the Fireside Bowl,
and on the line now, it's Laura Stein. Hi, Laura.

Laura: Hey, how are you?

Leora: Fine, thanks. Do you have the towel around your neck and a big
glass of water.

Laura: Well, it was uh...no. I'm standing in the cool breeze outside.

Leora: Yeah. How was it tonight?

Laura: It was great, we played at a bowling alley actually that i guess
every night becomes this punk rock club. There were tonnes of people that
came out, I was kind of surprised.

Leora: People weren't bowling when you were playing, though. No?

Laura: No, they were respectful and listened.

Leora: But you still had to play a show and there was a sign that said
`no lofting the balls' or something. So this is your first tour with your
new drummer who is also the first male in the band?

Laura: Yep.

Leora: So how does that change the social dynamic?

Laura: Um, I'm not sure if it does that much. We keep making jokes that
he's becoming more and more girlie as the weeks wear on. If anyone's
changing, it's probably him. But I think...he's really an easy going person
to get along with and right now I guess the main difference is that right
now he's not a songwriter and so that's probably the only real change
that's happened in terms of band dynamics. He doesn't bring his own songs
in, but he helps with arrangements and that kind of thing, so...

Leora: 'Cause I figured out if you want...not that you should but if you
want to change the name of the band cause, you know, you lost the `a'...have
you figured this out already? What the name of the band could be with
your new drummer?

Laura: Well a friend of ours keeps calling us jmle (pronounced juhmall)
and won't stop so...

Leora: Well now I...jmble (pronounced jumble)...J and then Mike Belitsky
right? J M B L E, jmble.

Laura: Oooh, nice.

Leora: I like jmble, nobody's suggest jmble?

Laura: That works.

Leora: I like the sound of it.

Laura: No one's done that yet but I'll throw it out to the rest of them
and see what they think.

<sound of large truck driving very close to where Laura is standing>

Leora: You really are outside.

Laura: Yeah. (laughs)

Leora: Well I'd better let you go because you don't want to be outdoors
in Chicago late at night, anything could happen.

Laura: Right.

Leora: Ok, thanks for calling, Laura.

Laura: Ok, no problem.

Leora: Have a good time. Bye.

Laura: Buhbye.

(they play "Double Edge")
