last night \!/ birdland

hey, last night was my first night out since the 
surgery, and i really had a good time at birdland.

ORANGE GLASS are surprisingly good.  tara s'appart,
as she is sometimes called, plays meaty bass lines
and this project that sounds so exactly like eric's
trip on their seven-inch sounds much more varied
live.  a definite superchunk influence, on a lot
of levels (they did a cover of "i'll be your sister",
the same song that superchunk cover and which you can 
hear on _incidental music_).  i highly recommend that
people check them out when they get a chance.

COOL BLUE HALO must have felt the pressure of opening
for a loud band like coyote.  they rocked harder than 
what i've seen them do before.  they opened with a 
truly excellent cover of "femme fatale" by the velvet 
underground.  their newer material sounds good and i 
understand that they will be putting out a cd on no 
records.

COYOTE were in fine form.  they did all of the songs
on their cd ep, including their gun club cover.  (good
covers seemed to be the theme of the night.)  they
also did a new one that sounds really good, and a
wikked version of "never let your friends find you
dead."  bubaiskull songs "swing low sweet chariot"
and "i remember drinking" seem to have found a home
in the regular coyote repertoire.  last night's
encore was "sex beat" + "i remember drinking".

it's good to be back.
